Intervention details
-
We are located in North West London and are currently working in 14 different schools. Our consulting rooms are in Edgware, North West London. We also conduct consultations online.
-
Children ages 2-16, with free screening for pupils from reception onwards.
-
Speech production. Understanding and processing information. Expressive language. Social Communication. Preliteracy sound awareness skills. Literacy skills.
-
A collaborative child-centred approach to child development, focusing on the child’s key strengths and helping them fulfil their true potential. We prioritise working collaboratively with school staff and parents.
Working with schools
-
We provide a ‘wrap around’ service for each school - providing inset training for staff, specific training for Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) working with our clients; communicating with parents and liaising with staff after each session to ensure the application of concepts learned within each session. We offer a ‘free screening’ for pupils at a school based on the concerns of teachers and/or parents.
-
You contact the SLT directly or Kid Speech London at info@kidspeechlondon.co.uk to discuss the needs or interests of your school. We will then discuss the training options with you with regards to topics, length and cost.
Assessment & screening
-
The screening entails either observing or interacting with the child for approximately 10-15 minutes. We focus on informally screening the areas of concern as raised by the parent or teacher. In some cases, where we know that a full assessment is required, we would skip this screening and proceed directly to the full assessment.
-
We will arrange a time to present the outcomes of the assessment to you, your child’s teacher and SENDCO. We will discuss our recommendations and make arrangements for supporting your child where appropriate.
-
Yes, parents will be sent a number of forms to read, complete and return before intervention begins. These forms include:
⁃ Case history form
⁃ Consent for us to share information with other professionals involved with your child
⁃ Video consent form
⁃ GDPR documentation
The basics
-
There is no typical length of therapy. It depends on the nature and severity of the child’s difficulties, the intervention targets, and how the child responds to the intervention and practises the new skills learned during the sessions.
-
It depends on what is required to support each child to help them reach their potential. Anything from twice weekly sessions, to once a month parent consultations are offered as needed.
-
Depending on the nature of the identified difficulties, and the age of your child, intervention can range from weekly one to one sessions in school or in our rooms, to periodic in-person or Zoom consultations with you.
Regardless of the support process chosen, we pride ourselves on constant communication and liaison with parents and school staff to ensure the most efficient support.
-
You have the option of arranging consolidation sessions, provided by one of our Kid Speech London Key Workers.
We are also available for questions or discussions in the period between sessions. We may even ask parents to send video clips for us to comment on and make suggestions to move forward during this time.
-
You book a time that is convenient for you to meet with one of our Speech & Language Therapists on Zoom. The consultation lasts for 30 minutes. During this time, we will discuss your concerns relating to your child’s speech / language / communication or literacy development. We will talk about strategies you can begin using to aid your child’s development, as well as ideas to obtain further support in your local area. We will arrange further consultations if appropriate.
Please note: this is NOT an assessment!
Parent involvement
-
Your role is to:
⁃ Support your child to play the games or practise the activities set by the KSL Therapist.
⁃ Report on the outcomes of the practising to the KSL SLT the day before each session. This will ensure the most effective preparation for the session and the most efficient use of time during each session.
⁃ Update the KSL SLT with any additional information that you feel may be relevant to your child, their progress and the intervention process.
-
You will be updated via email/voice note or WhatsApp after each therapy or consolidation session. You will also receive a summary of progress plus an opportunity to discuss the ‘next steps’ at the end of each agreed period ranging from 6 weeks to half termly.
-
Either contact KSL directly at info@kidspeechlondon.co.uk or ask your SENDCO or teacher to reach out to us to arrange a free screening or full assessment.
Fees, payments & policies
-
The charge for assessment, intervention and training depends on the type of support required and the level of the Speech & Language Therapist involved. Please reach out to us to determine the range of costs at each level.
-
Payments for Drop-In Consultations are made by card at the time of booking. For all other services, we take either cash or BACS payment. Intervention invoices are sent at the end of every month, and payment is due within two weeks of receipt of the invoice. For assessments, payment must be received before the feedback session is arranged. For inset training, invoices will be sent immediately after the training and payment is due within two weeks.
-
There is no cost for a cancellation with 24 hours’ notice. We understand that children can become ill suddenly, and you may need to cancel at shorter notice. In this case, the charge for the session is at the discretion of the therapist
-
We recommend you discuss this with your insurance provider to check the terms of your coverage and the reimbursement available for private speech and language therapy.
Waiting lists & other options
-
You can book a 30 minute online Drop-In Consultation with one of our Speech & Language Therapists to discuss ideas and specific questions you may have regarding your child and how to support them whilst waiting for a slot to become available.
Private vs NHS services
-
Both private and NHS therapists have the same training and qualification, and may offer similar services. However, NHS waiting times may be longer for both assessment and therapy, and therapy pathways may be shorter in the NHS.
-
Generally, this is not a problem, depending on the therapy approach being taken. However, it is important that both therapists are aware of the arrangement, to ensure that the therapy is effective.
Professional standards
-
All practising Speech and Language Therapists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You can confirm that a therapist is registered by going to the HCPC website, choosing the profession and searching for their name.
